OVERVIEW
Rivers, mountains and villages of the north, at the slow pace of Laos
13 days / 12 nights · Luang Prabang and Nong Khiaw
There is a Laos you don’t rush through — you live it slowly. This journey begins and ends in Vientiane and climbs into the country’s most authentic north, following the thread of the Mekong and its tributaries — by train, by boat and on foot — through green valleys, steep mountains and small rural villages.
From Luang Prabang, the ancient capital of palaces and temples, to the Kuang Si waterfalls; from the mountains of Nong Khiaw, where the Nam U river turns golden at sunset, to the time-stilled village of Muang Ngoy; all the way to Muang La, among hot springs, terraced rice fields and Khmu villages. A route that weaves together forest treks, thermal baths, local flavours and the welcome of a people whose smile stays with you.
We travel as a small caravan — a maximum of 6 people, by choice — with Andrea, our group leader from Switzerland, alongside us the whole way. No hurry: just time enough to look, breathe and be surprised.

ITINERARY
-
Flight from Italy to Vientiane. Overnight on board.
With flight included: departure from Italy on 14 November 2026, 21 February 2027 or 6 March 2027, depending on the departure.
Own flight: you must arrive in Vientiane on 15 November 2026, 22 February 2027 or 7 March 2027 respectively (time to be confirmed).
-
Once we land in Vientiane we head to the hotel and officially form the group, then go out for dinner in the Lao capital — a relaxed briefing on the trip and a first chance to get to know our travel companions before heading north. (Night in Vientiane)
-
By train we reach Luang Prabang, the ancient Lao capital and our first real taste of the north. Here we can try a cooking class — Luang Prabang is famous for its wonderful food — then have dinner in a restaurant run by young people from difficult backgrounds, before wandering through its one-of-a-kind night market. (Night in Luang Prabang)
-
An early start towards the magnificent Kuang Si Falls, which will steal your heart, followed by a visit to the Buffalo Ice Cream & Café — a project that supports local buffalo farmers. On the way back we stop at a very local market, then enjoy the riverfront in town with a sunset aperitivo, closing the day with the flavours of the Walking Street at dusk. (Night in Luang Prabang)
-
After breakfast we visit the Royal Palace and Luang Prabang’s main temples to understand the history of the country and the city, then continue with a gentle trek and a crossing of the Mekong by boat (weather permitting). (Night in Luang Prabang)
-
The day opens with a spectacular sunrise from the top of Phousi Hill, before a transfer to Nong Khiaw. Once we reach this fairytale spot we settle into our rooms, then take a very light trek just above the village to enjoy the sunset turning the whole Nam U river golden. Dinner is our pick of a few special local restaurants. (Night in Nong Khiaw)
-
From Nong Khiaw we board a boat up the river to the nature-wrapped little town of Muang Ngoy. We explore caves, rice paddies and viewpoints and watch the making of the famous, prized Lao textiles. We paddle back by canoe towards Nong Khiaw, then soak up the sunset at a riverside bar and all the calm this corner of paradise knows how to give. (Night in Nong Khiaw)
-
Our third day in Nong Khiaw is given to a trek up to one of the area’s most iconic peaks, the Phar Khew Lom 360 viewpoint, with the village that has hosted us laid out far below. After the trek there’s time to rest and watch the slow life that animates Nong Khiaw. (Night in Nong Khiaw)
-
Landing at Oudomxay, a transfer of about forty-five minutes along Route 2E brings us to Muang La, our refuge among the mountains of northern Laos. In the afternoon we take our first soak in the village hot springs, surrounded by lush green, then stroll along the banks of the Nam Pak river and enjoy a sunset at the water’s edge before dinner in one of the village’s little restaurants. (Night in Muang La)
-
The morning is for Wat Pha Chao Singkham, the ancient temple that guards a four-hundred-year-old Buddha said — by legend — to grant the wishes of those who visit it. From there we set off on a trek through terraced rice fields and bamboo bridges to a Khmu village perched on the hillside, where we share a traditional lunch with the locals. In the late afternoon we return to the hot springs for a second, restoring soak before a relaxed evening. (Night in Muang La)
-
An early start for Nam Kat Yorla Pa, the vast nature park set in the forest about an hour and a half from Muang La, passing through Muang Xay. We cross thirteen suspension bridges to a spectacular multi-level waterfall, where we can cool off in a natural pool, then launch ourselves along the eleven zipline routes threading between the treetops, on spans from thirty to three hundred metres. We’re back in Muang La by evening, ready for a well-earned dinner after a day of adrenaline. (Night in Muang La)
-
Leaving Muang La, a last transfer takes us to Muang Xay, where we stop at the local market — especially lively at weekends — or climb to the Phou That stupa for a final panoramic look over the town, before heading to the station. Back in Vientiane by train, we have time to visit a city temple and hunt for souvenirs of this magnificent journey, before one last dinner all together. (Night in Vientiane)
-
A morning of goodbyes, then the transfer to the airport for the flight home — and the end of an unforgettable journey. If you flew with us, we travel back to Italy together, arriving the same or the following day depending on the connection. [return/arrival timing to confirm]

Meet your guide:
Andrea Arnoldi
Nice to meet you!
For me travelling means discovering the world through the eyes of those who live it every day. I believe there's a deep difference between travelling and taking a holiday: travelling means being moved, sharing, and connecting with a smile even when there's no common language.
I've explored Europe, North and Central America, Asia and North Africa, always in my favourite way: on the road, living each place to the full. But the journey that changed my life was leaving everything behind for nine months in Southeast Asia — Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia — an experience that made me grow as a traveller and as a person.
